An Old Agreement

I've always liked foxes and hares appearing together in paintings. They're natural opposites in many ways, yet they seem to belong to the same stories. In An Old Agreement, I imagined them as two ancient characters who have long since grown tired of chasing one another.

They sit back to back, each looking in a different direction, as though keeping watch over their own corner of the world. There is a quiet sense of understanding between them, the feeling that some bargains are so old nobody remembers who made them. Not friendship exactly, but respect. And perhaps a little shared wisdom gathered over many seasons.
