I Never Wanted a Horse began with the title, which made me laugh long before the painting existed. It has the feeling of a very specific story being told, one where the listener has clearly arrived halfway through the conversation and is missing several important details.

Surrounded by an extravagant halo of flowers and wearing enormous green sunglasses, the subject projects complete confidence while somehow remaining slightly inscrutable. The painting sits somewhere between fashion portrait, character study and visual punchline. I like that it never quite explains itself. Like the title, it leaves just enough unanswered to let your imagination fill in the gaps.
