In The Thicket

In The Thicket began with the idea of a hare half-hidden in a tangle of stems and leaves, the sort of place where something might be watching you long before you notice it. The hare sits quietly among the flowers, alert but untroubled, perfectly at home within the shelter of the undergrowth.

I liked the contrast between the soft, decorative floral patterns woven through the hare's coat and the darker silhouettes of the ferns behind it. There is a sense of concealment in the painting, but not secrecy exactly. More the feeling of a creature that belongs to its surroundings so completely that it almost becomes part of them.
