The Vain Optician and The Wheelbearer is an original painted diptych from my Medieval Sub-Plots series, which explores morality, vanity, power, and social roles through birds depicted in medieval costume.
The work consists of two individual paintings conceived as a single piece and sold together. Shown in profile, the paired peacocks face one another across the divide, their elaborate dress and composed expressions suggesting an underlying imbalance of power. Rich pattern and layered symbolism draw on medieval visual language, where costume and adornment conveyed status, virtue, and vice.
Professionally framed in substantial black wooden frames with fine gold slips, the diptych has a strong physical presence. The frames are solid and weighty, chosen to complement the historic tone and narrative weight of the work. The piece arrives ready to hang.
A short narrative accompanies the diptych and forms part of the wider Medieval Sub-Plots series. The full story is included as a visual image within the gallery.
