The Knotted Groom and The Fruitless Bride is an original painted diptych from my Medieval Sub-Plots series, which explores marriage, morality, secrecy, and social expectation through birds depicted in medieval costume.
The work consists of two individual paintings conceived as a single piece and sold together. Shown in profile and facing one another, the paired geese present an outward sense of union and harmony, while subtle details in their dress and posture suggest a more complicated reality beneath the surface. Decorative pattern and symbolic motifs draw on medieval visual language, where clothing and adornment conveyed status, fortune, and fate.
Professionally framed in substantial black wooden frames with fine gold slips, the diptych has a strong physical presence. The frames are solid and weighty, chosen to complement the historic tone and narrative weight of the work. The paintings arrive ready to hang.
A short narrative accompanies the diptych and forms part of the wider Medieval Sub-Plots series. The full story is included as a visual image within the gallery.
